With less than a month until A-level results day on 13 August, banks are busy trying to attract students hoping to go to university, with current accounts offering cash incentives, freebies and generous interest-free overdrafts.

Although free gifts can be tempting, the size of the interest-free overdraft on offer could prove much more valuable over the course of a degree than a one-off incentive. Bear in mind, however, that while overdrafts can provide a useful financial safety net, they are still a form of borrowing and will eventually need to be repaid.

Here’s our rundown of some of the best student account deals currently available.

Top student accounts for 2026 university starters

NatWest and Royal Bank of Scotland currently offer some of the most generous interest-free overdrafts. New customers can apply for an overdraft of up to £500 in their first term, which can increase to £2,000 by the end of the first year and up to £3,250 by the third year. These accounts also offer a £100 cash reward and a four-year tastecard membership worth £80 a year, which gives students discounts at restaurants, cinemas and other attractions.

Nationwide's FlexStudent account is also worth a look. Alongside an interest-free overdraft of up to £3,000 over a three-year course, students can claim £100 cashback and £10 per month in Just Eat vouchers. To qualify, students must pay in £500 and make five debit card payments by 11 December 2026.

Andrew Hagger, personal finance expert at Moneycomms.co.uk said: “The Just Eat promotion was a big success last year with more than half a million take away vouchers downloaded - a massive hit with students.

“Interestingly 11 per cent of Nationwide’s student bank accounts were opened in branches, showing how those perhaps opening a bank account for the first time, value that face-to-face service.”

Student accounts with prize draws

Students who expect to travel frequently may prefer the Santander Edge student account, as it comes with a free 16-25 Railcard, although the maximum interest-free overdraft is up to £1,500 in years one to three.

Customers can also access rewards through Santander's Boost programme, as well as getting entry to a prize draw where the maximum prize is £100,000 but every student is guaranteed to win at least £20.

Rachel Springall, Finance Expert at Moneyfactscompare.co.uk, said: "The max prize could be life-changing for students, and even the smaller prizes could make a real difference to help towards costs. It is wise for students to understand the terms of the prize draw, particularly that they must continue to hold the account when they win and at the time of any prize payout, which should be no later than the end of January 2027.”

Lloyds Bank and Bank of Scotland are set to launch their new student account incentives from 30 July. Students who open an account by 30 October and pay in at least £500 will receive £100 in cashback, while those making 20 qualifying debit card transactions a month between November and April can earn up to £120 in Deliveroo vouchers.

Both accounts offer an interest-free overdraft of up to £1,500 during the first three years of study, increasing to as much as £2,000 in subsequent years.

Lloyds is also introducing a prize draw in which five student account holders will win £9,790 – equivalent to a year's tuition fees. Customers must opt in through the Lloyds Rewards Hub or mobile banking app to be eligible.

Rachel Springall said: “The rising cost of living is taking its toll on everyone, and students living away from home for the first time may find the financial pressures particularly daunting. With costs rising from all directions, the chance to have the equivalent of a year’s tuition fees covered could make a significant difference, easing a major financial burden.”
